Takisha first prepped Kerry’s natural hair with a deep conditioning hair mask and then used a blow dryer “to smooth her hair out and give it that sleek look with some slight volume.” She didn’t color Kerry’s own hair, though. Instead, she custom colored extensions from her collection and “clipped them in all around her hair and then cut to give her ends that blunt look,” said Takisha.
When styling Washington's hair, she started by parting Washington's hair on the left side (she felt looked better with her gown). Strudiant-Drew then sectioned off the hair at the nape of the neck and clipped in TSD Hair Extensions—some a soft brown, others blonde. The result: a sophisticated, yet totally edgy style that nailed the party-chic vibe of Globes themselves.
Nature and a little bit of heat are to thank for Kerry's breezy 'do. "I blow-dried her hair on a medium setting to make her natural coils swell slightly," says hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, who styled the star's locks. Then to emphasize the curl, she added TSD Hair Extensions in Deep Wave ($160, tsdhair.com).
"All the young celebs are wearing it, especially the models," says Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, stylist to Kerry Washington and creator of TSD Hair.
Working her way from the bottom of Kerry's hair to the top, she added in TSD Hair Extension in "Deep Wave" to give Kerry's hair more length and volume. "I used a paddle brush to brush out certain curls to give her hair a wavy, soft look," Drew said. "On other curls I used my finger to pull and expand them a little, and other curls I left them alone."
You recently launched TSD Hair, your very own hair extension line! What was this venture important to you?
I was trying different extensions on different celebrities, and I was like, “I don’t like this hair. This hair is nice, but it’s too silky, [or] this hair’s nice but it’s tangling. The quality is so important. So I started to look for my own extensions! It took over three years. After I finally found the right textures, my husband helped me with the packaging and everything. I call him my manager. When I launched TSD Hair at the Bronner Brothers hair show, they sold out! For me, when it comes to extensions and weaves, it has to look natural. It has to blend. Nobody should know your secret, they should just think, “Oh wow, your hair looks great.”
“Box braids are one of the best braided styles you can have because you can be creative with it. You’re not just stuck wearing one style,” says Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, celebrity hairstylist and owner of TSD hair extensions. “Braids are definitely in right now and everyone wants to wear them. They give some women a certain edge and they can be sexy, too.”
But just how do her winning looks actually come together? Plenty of teamwork, she says, not forgetting to give credit to her hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew and makeup artist Carola Gonzalez. "When I'm expecting, I like to have big hair because I like to think the bigger the hair the smaller you look," she says with a laugh in the video above..
This look has handled written all over it. Kerry Washington stunned on the pink-and-red carpet tonight at the 2016 Met Gala dressed in none other than couture Marc Jacobs. The Scandal star looked absolutely divine in her black sequined gown and lace gloves while her hair was down complete with magenta highlights.
Kerry Washington was showing off her luscious pregnancy hair with voluminous curls and magenta "highlights" at the 2016 Met Gala. The mermaid color looked stunning against her complexion. But she didn't go low-key with the rest of the style and instead added to the drama with smoldering, green eye makeup smudged all around and a gorgeous peach pout.
MOST MAJOR MAKEOVER
Kerry Washington not only showed up to the red carpet displaying abrand new baby bump — she flaunted a bold purple hue and tons of texture to play up her goth-inspired Marc Jacobs dress. “When it came to styling her hair, it was all about the cut,” says hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew. “What better way to add extra drama was by giving her that ombré color with a deep purple, and texture.”
